Dublin AIDS Alliance (DAA) supports the USI Sexual Health Education Roadshow

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) launched its Sexual Health Education Roadshow in NUI Maynooth today (26th September).  The Roadshow aims to educate college students about their sexual health and to encourage those who are sexually active to practice safer sex.

As part of the Roadshow, DAA will attend four college campuses from September to December, and will promote the current Just Carry One campaign, promoting consistent condom use amongst young people to prevent STI transmission, including HIV.  Students will get an opportunity to interact with the Just Carry One team from DAA, and the attractions will include a chance to play the ‘Rubber Bounce’ game, condom demonstrations, and free condom and lube packs.

Findings from the Irish Contraception and Crisis Pregnancy Study (ICCP, 2010) show that consistent use of contraception among young adults aged 18 to 25 years is high and increasing, with 80% saying they use contraception every time they have sex.  However, 20% of 18 to 25 year olds did not report consistent use of contraception in the last year.  The study also found that the most common reason cited by 18 to 25 year olds for not always using contraception in the past year was because sex was not planned or they were unprepared (58%).  One of the objectives of the DAA Just Carry One campaign is to encourage young people to always carry a condom and ‘be prepared’.

As part of the USI Roadshow, DAA will also be in Waterford IT on 17th October, Sligo IT on 7th November, and IT Blanchardstown on 5th December.
